Description

I was born in the small city of Santa Ana El Salvador March 25 1944......actual population 245000....

As you can image everybody there is proud of the cathedral.
So this is for sure a "cliche" picture in El Salvador.....but I had to post it.....
Filter ....my 30 years old, Circular still rotating, polarizer filter.....bettter than the new ones.
The original is color....but the B&W works better.

Gorgeous! The stark brightness of the front of the cathedral creates a beautiful contrast against the darker, ominous sky. Very nice black and white photograph. :)

Avatar Slapo

 05/25/07 @881

It's a good one, but some spots on the cathedral got almost overexposed.
Maybe getting a light tripod and using exposure bracketing would help next time (it's not very difficult to blend either).
That said, it's still a pretty good one.

Absolutely breathtaking! The dynamic use of black to white encompassing every tonal change in between is very well executed, and this photograph shows how effective it can be at giving anything, even a building presence and "personality".

I love the black steeple on the right played against the white clouds, and the white steeple on the left standing in front the dark sky, until it begins to hit the lower part of the structure, where it turns black again to meet the white clouds at the bottom. This really makes the cathedral stand out and yet at the same time seamlessly connects it with the background.

You don't see too many structures like this in the US (if any), as we tend to smash our history into the ground and build another car park or "modern" building over top of it. So it's really a treat for me to see vicariously through your eyes!

In the words of Joni Mitchell::
"They paved paradise and put up a parking lot."

They just keep on coming... Another excellent work! 7/7

Cliche, maybe, but this isn't the typical point and shoot touristy photo! This is magnificent and breath-taking! I could stare at this one for a long time, you've definitely captured all the majesty of such incredible architecture. +10 :)

Carlos this is one of my favorites from you recently for sure! I'd say that polarizer is still doings its job very well...I've been trying to get some infrared black and white shots of churches around the area, and none of these even come close to this one..amazing!

Avatar Madanapale

 05/28/07 @081

Thanks to you all for the kind comments.....
I have taken many pictures of this church on different ocassions.......no one made justice to the subject.....except this one.
Beside the use of a polarizer I think the picture came out fairly good because the light conditions were very close to ideal.
And that makes me reflect that sometimes is bettter to take another picture under better condtions than trying to save one that is not so good....this goes specially with landscapes and buildings.....street portraits are different.

masterful conversion Carlos! and as I was saying to a friend earlier, they sure don't make em like they used to. That could be said of both your filter and the cathedral

Avatar maytree

 05/29/07 @333

hello Carlos, the view on this cathedral is a cliche maybe, but your photo is absolutely perfect. Your "30 years old, circular still rotating" filter done a good job for you ;) I m sure the b&w choice is the best.

my regards
