Description
This is the back of a Mausoleum in the cementery of Santa Ana….This combination of sculpture with “bas relief” measures about 1.2 m by 2.4m. (4 by 8 feet).
Inside there is a little chapel….On the front there is only the name of the person, that I will call just “D”…..I wish that his story would be written beside his name…..
About 50 years ago “D” went to school, a private, Catholic, very conservative school…”D” didn’t know that one of his classmate was carrying a gun, probably just to show off….and a few hours later, as the owner manipulated the gun….,accidentally shot “D”, who was seated in front of him….”D” died a few minutes later……he was only 10 years old.
This is a true story, I was on the classroom next to his……we heard the shot and later the commotion…..At that time nobody carried guns in schools.
50 years later you hear similar or worse stories from everywhere, and a lot of arguments about it….some favoring the use of guns, say that “guns do not kill people”…..
It would be too long to list all the pros and cons…..I only will add, that once I read, that when you are confused about something….you have to ask yourself…..”Who will benefit from the facts?”…….
NOW ABOUT THE PICTURE….
I was very fortunate to take the picture when the sun was shining on the sculpture from the side…..and only the main subjects were fully illuminated, leaving the bas relief in the shadows…

The framing is just right with a little space between the figures and the frame it works just right and the composition is spot on. The light, as you describe, is just perfect highlighting the most important people in the sculpture. I'm not sure if this is black and white or simply that color because of the stone, but it works well in the photo. The tones go from white in the bottom left to monochromatic gray to darker gray up at the top left. A neat effect.
My only problem with this photo is that I don't know whether to say 'A beautiful photo!' or 'A beautiful sculpture!'. That is always difficult when photographing something like this. In your photo "An Angel for Christina" I think it was a different case. There was more to the photo than just the sculpture. You had a beautiful sky and the building in there as well. It's comparable to say photographing a painting I guess.
It's a bit confusing, but either way It IS a beautiful sculpture, and you did pull off the photo of it very well.

I wish I could credit the author of the sculpture....All that I know is that most came from Italy.....
You can say "beautiful scultpure".....I just did the best I could to take a good picture of it......

The light on the main figures is a great catch
Only minor critic is that the top highlighted "dude" is not entirely sharp (at least on my monitor
Apart from that I think you have done an excellent job on this one (as always

Peter......Slapo.....I didn`t burn any highlight....they look fine in my high res ......they don`t looks as bright in a Viewsonic......I don`t know how they look in a regular one....
Agree ....about the blanket.....I have another one including the whole blanket....but that will call for another cropping on this one.....and there was nothing else at the lef to be included.

Brilliant work as always Carlos !!
The composition looks perfect too I like the way the 4 hands that make half a cricle are positioned in the frame !!! Don't really think adding more of the straight table from bottom will help !!
As said its all about the light & that U have nailed it !!! Exposed perfectly (sorry, great zones
Top Marks !!!
# Kurlowski makes it sound like we should all stop photographing since we never make stuff just picture it

We don`t make the cathedrals or the statues.....and we certainly do not make the mountains or the people......The merit of a photograph is the ability of the author to translate to the observer some of the beauty of the subject......and in order to do that we can choose the right lighting, the proper angle and composition.......and later we can enhance some of the aspects of the image, balance the zones, crop, etc in order to get an "artistic" result..
We reproduce and recreate "reality" the best way we can......with all the limitation of the media and our own limitations.

But what I think makes this more than just a photograph of a sculpture is the lighting. There are a few things that could have ruined the lighting in this photograph.
1- Flash- a flash could have been applied, and left a flat boring apperance to the sculpture. Accenting nothing and bringing nothing out of it.
2- Overcast - no shadows at all, just a gray nasty subject.
3- Light coming from the left, would have accented it wrong... and brought out the wrong elements in the sculpture.
The lighting is what makes this photograph. The light hits the subject perfectly to bring them out of the wall even more than what they really are. Almost like a painting would, even though there are things going on in the background the lighting brings out what needs to be seen. And you can see the really beauty in the sculpture itself, the beautiful shadows cast across the mans arms, a nice sculpture, maybe ill see it in person one day. Thanks for sharing carlos.

Love this picture... as said above the lighting is perfect. We should appreciate that not everyone can't do this... it's a great work. Give me a camera, I would take a bad photo of this, and you won't like the sculpture that much
¨D¨ had a sad story, I'm very sorry... I don't think anyone should carry guns, or anything that could do damage to another person... whatever they say, the use of a gun will always have a sad ending.

but i think i'd never go for photographing the sculpture this way. i mean, it's the only object in the frame and straight front view doesn't really add anything from photographer.
